Crisis at Anglican Schools

Dear Ones,

I am writing to let you know of a financial crisis at our two largest schools in Peru.  I am shamelessly asking for your financial support for these two great schools.  They are Colegio San Mateo in Lima, and  Colegio San Lucas in Arequipa.

In Lima the largest and oldest classroom building at San Mateo was condemned in December.  Its structural columns were unable to support the load because the rebar had totally disintegrated. The old construction either used sea water or beach sand for the concrete, and the salt content reacted with the rebar causing it to crumble.

The building has been demolished.

The total cost will be about $37,500.  Neither the school nor the Diocese have sufficient funds. Bishop Jorge has sold his personal car to help pay for some of the cost.  Work has already begun in faith since the children return March 5.

The new construction is being handled by a contractor whom I have known and trusted with several projects over the last five years.  The person in charge of the School ministry for the Diocese of Peru is Fr. Ricardo Peñaranda.  He is highly qualified and strict in his standards for the schools in both new construction and   educational standards.  I have confidence that these projects are being done with excellence.

In Arequipa at Colegio San Lucas a classroom block erected a few years ago has been rain damaged.

The concrete used was of a poor grade and has become porous.  In last year’s rains, water came through and made the rooms briefly unusable.

This year’s rains threaten, and we need to cover the roof in corrugated metal, sealed to the concrete.  The cost of this will be about $5,900.  Concerned parents are withdrawing their children from the school.

I received this estimate from Fr. Ricardo regarding both schools – it is in Spanish and the amounts are in Peruvian Nuevos Soles,

Estimado hermano bendiciones:  te envío un presupuesto general de lo que cuesta las diferentes obras que se están y se van a ejecutar en los colegios.

  • COLEGIO SAN MATEO
  • 1.- Demolición de estructuras 3 pisos ..………………………………..……..   30,000 soles.
  • 2.- Construcción  de fachada demolida.………………………………………..    8,000 soles.
  • 3.- Construcción de nuevas aulas provisionales..…………………………..  50,000 soles.
  • 4.- Acondicionamiento de infraestructura antigua…………………………  20,000 soles.
  •      (pintado, reacondicionamiento de patio y escaleras )
  • 5.- Imprevistos ..…………………………………………………………………………    2,000 soles.

  • COLEGIO SAN LUCAS

In agreement with SAMS-USA, funds can be sent to Ian Montgomery Special Project Fund – Schools.  SAMS will send these donations, without administrative deduction, to the Diocese of Peru where I have an account for special projects.  The Diocese of Peru takes 4.5% for overheads, and generally there is some loss to banking fees and exchange rate fluctuation.

I am begging you, in the name of our Lord, to please be generous.

Your brother in Christ – Ian+

2Cor. 8:1-7   We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia,  for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints— and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. Accordingly, we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete among you this act of grace. But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in this act of grace also.
